Themosiphon better than liquid pump coolers? Admin Guides

Thermal Siphon Coolers like the “Thermosiphon” Overtake CPU Water…

  • December 19, 2019
  • by Michael

Should you consider AIL PC coolers for your CPU or Water block coolers? Doesn’t the idea of liquid leaking scare you when it comes to all that money you put into parts. Thermal pipes have liquid but it’s inside sealed metal. They apparently fail if the heat is beyond the point where the coolant will condense at the far end of the pipe and follow the wick back to the end touching the CPU cooling mount.

There is a new cooler model being promoted even pre-release in prototype form. The Thermosiphon idea is that you use gravity to return the coolant to the hot area where it can transport it, the same way a heat pipe does. Whatever the engineering, it seems to be working in this new patented design (geometry of the pipes is patented). They didn’t invent the thermosiphon, it was used in industrial applications already but they made it work now for CPU cooling. The pipes are in a loop so they are pumping continuously using convection heating forces.

You can find it on channels like Linus Tech Tips – a quite informative, if extremely commercial advertising style Youtube channel. He does give a run through the various generations of fin based coolers and how they managed to deal with increasing power output.

This guy always gets excited if anything manages to deal with AMD’s ridiculously new powerful CPUs like the “Threadripper”

You can pre-order this beast on https://www.icegiantcooling.com/ – and no, I’m not affiliated but this is big news for server engineers who want to go top end CPU with air-cooling. Some of you might just be enthusiasts who can afford these power builds or video/graphics workstation users. Its very exciting though so I wanted to blog on it – because exciting developments are limited these days.

I think I’m hacked? What next (one might ask).

These are the thoughts of a security guy compiled into what I hope will be a non boring edition. If people care they can find all the advice in the universe – passwords, software etc. Once that fails on you its a different space.

Once you think you are already hacked and you find this you are looking for ideas rather than same old el-standero advice. Which may be good advice but hardly much help. If you are in this concerning place you might need a more light hearted and less technical post to read – yet with some creative solutions at the end.

Reverse engineering being hacked:

First – take stock by turning your computer off and formulating a plan. I’m assuming you feel that you have been compromised and things were getting worse.

Peripheral Vasopressors: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly | SinaiEM
I got you señor  – now hand over the cash (Ransomware)

What is the worst that can happen

  1. You might get wiped completely
  2. Ransomware – your drive gets encrypted so its like the data is gone unless you pay the extortion
  3. Your OS is so infected that you can’t really use it to clean itself because the tools are too resilient and just keep replacing themselves or damaging the system so you can’t remove them.

How long is it going to take to get back to where I was?

THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY (1966) on KL Studio Classics Blu-ray

The good

Do you have backups that are relatively current? Maybe you can backtrack to before you feel you got hacked – but even that may seem as though some files or changes might be lost.

The bad

You aren’t sure what backups you have, or if they work, where they are. You really just want to turn the computer back on right now and soldier on with that anti-virus, anti-malware which has already failed you. Yes, in the past I was often able to remove an infection with a different product … but these days it gets more difficult.

Ratting is related to RAT or Remote Access Tool – like a remote support tool except for the purposes of stopping you from fixing and stealing your secrets or doing bad things. Some of these tools really won’t let you get rid of them until you find every part and delete it – likely you’ll go for maintenance or safe mode. Even there it may not be possible to find where its hiding.

Best duel scene - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - YouTube
Being hacked is ugly – the solution that is obvious – just accept it.
Reinstall a clean system 🙁 Reload your work, you backed it up right? 🙂

The Ugly

Its time to face the ugly – its time to reinstall your system. You can go to the stop, get a new hard disk or SSD. Maybe you don’t have “recovery ware” – that lets you install the system the way it was delivered. Laptops often ask you to make some kind of USB or DVD image.

Reinstalling your system is the only way to be sure and it is what security professionals call for. This is where you end up finding yourself in “boring land” of guides like “how to perform a clean install of your computer”

They are very positive for people who have collected everything and have backups already. If you have no backup – well the best way to make a backup is to pull your disk and clone it. If that is too hard, and that’s fine – i accept that you are probably reading this saying “oh shit, oh shit” if you’ve been hacked and the truth is dawning on you.

However, it takes mere hours to reinstall to a new drive and start to copy things over if you get the right tools. So just go to a store and find someone that has a clue. Ask them for some way of cloning a disk, can they sell you a disk/ssd? Maybe they will even put an OS (windows, ubuntu, mac) onto the disk for you so you can try to boot it? You never know how resourceful a computer store person might be – they might already have all the “pre-install” stuff ready.

How To Make A Windows 10 Bootable USB Flash Drive ...
You need media, blank, big, fast USB and SD cards are also handy

If you own the memory devices you’re easily protected!

Both for manual backups before it’s too late or initiating recover activities after noticing you were hacked fast useful storage media must be on hand. You can move swiftly right away if you have very fast USB drives 150mb per second, are very cheap even at large sizes. Get several because you can’t have too many but you can certainly have too few.

Go offline (disconnect your internet) and start copying important files off while you prepare other steps. One might be a recovery image you get from the manufacturer, another might be your OS installer (bootable USB) that you make from a guide. These days your USB flash drives or SD memory cards are even accessibly pre-boot. Its certainly likely to quicker and less failure prone than that old external hard disk that you probably overloaded with music and video media.

Our work files – documents folder, email data – if it is stored on our laptop can usually fit on one of these tiny memory cards or flash drives.

If you just got hacked rebooting may make it worse?

Before you just reboot as if you had an app/system failure consider that being infected tends to install malware that will further install itself at reboot. If you have an Ubuntu bootable USB or a recovery media, a disk cloning utility – then you can boot into a different system so your malware is not activated. Then copy things to another location to be used for recovery of your files and settings later.

When I got infected by something very potent – using p2p apps to bypass firewalls the trap was waiting for the next reboot. It rewrote the windows registry permissions to the point that I didn’t have permission to reverse it. I had backups so I decided to fight the good fight with the stuff – like I usually would and would kill it off. I had tools to kill everything running in memory besides a few important bits.

The priority should always be to copy files over to storage, make backups if you are in “the bad” (unsure if you have backed up) or “the ugly” (you lose, time to reinstall fresh) scenarios. So I can’t advise you to do to start fighting and seeking and destroying malware by hand until you have copied everything. If you did you certainly want to be “offline” and being offline you might find you can’t do anything. So you should have a clean system to download and set up bootable media and tools. Try not to use your infected system – the downloads might become infected with virus/malware that prevents you from even starting them up.

If you reboot after things were looking grim it might trigger the next, worse phase, especially if you are online (on the internet). What you should do is find some other computer – maybe you can afford to just buy one, or borrow a laptop from family or friends so you can use it to clone your disk, make USB to reinstall or fix your OS.

There is a really serious worst case of persisting … you can get your bios wiped making your computer not so easy to recover. This picture is not so related, what you would get is just dead nothing, no boot at all if your bios got wiped. Its a little chip on the mainboard that enables boot – before your main system boots from disk.

Share Great Ideas – with a website

  • December 11, 2019June 7, 2020
  • by Michael

Living in a new part of the world – its really common to want to build a website to document your experiences and life. I’m an experienced expat and it can be far easier to work through me than try to deal with online companies with terrible customer service. While initial costs are higher because of my expertise, longer term expect a trouble free service with very fast turnaround on support requests.

Great Ideas can be wasted on Social media

Making connections with people is what blogging can be about, reaching out with your ideas and experiences. Where-ever you go – social media, forums, chats – meeting people in actual real life and giving them your details. Easy – yeah, sure? A website can be far safer to share than a Facebook friendship of someone you don’t really know. Blogs on Facebook are often not very persistent, they fade away and don’t get categorized. If you are willing to learn something like WordPress blogging can become as easy for you as it is for millions of users. I’d like to support you through that learning curve – it can be steep climb until the logic of the site is explained.

Then there is that section that is always nagging when you sign up – “your website?” – yeah – i have to get one of those one day. You don’t have one? Maybe you can get one for free, almost instantly. There are many ways to do this but in the end people end up re-doing it later to get more flexibility.

Contact me and I’ll help you get great ideas to where-ever you want them to reach. That doesn’t mean I’ll pitch you the same old product ideas – I’ll listen and then if I don’t have the advice ready I’ll research and come back to you. On the other hand there are tried and tested things you can do and I’m more interested in making new friends with similar ideas than just finding paying customers. I have a long history of getting people started just to see where it takes them.

For example … here are some ideas for shopping because, well I’m often shopping to find things I need to do my work. So its just another thing to share, customers and clients ask for recommends constantly.

Here’s a great idea for expats: An Amazon alternative. AliExpress

Amazon doesn’t deliver cheaply to some parts of the world – particularly South East Asia where a lot of people travel for extended trips working. Then they need a few little things – well you may have heard of Alibaba – but for small consumer orders I recommend AliExpress – they really guarantee their deliveries and I’ve been refunded when there was any issue. Much better than Ebay too.

AliExpress have NEW USER SPECIALS too where you get big discounts just for trying first time. So honestly, if you are banging your head trying to find or order something from this is your alternative. I’ve ordered tons of parts and built things from Ebay, Amazon and I would say AliExpress is the best experience so far. The site works well in English too. When in Thailand most of the websites were too hard for me to navigate to order things but many orders from AliExpress arrived quite fast and carved through customs. The prices are amazing much of the time. With Aliexpress for example I was able to get something I couldn’t find elsewhere. CR2 batteries are hard enough to find – for old cameras – like film cameras. I bought CR2 batteries and a charger and it actually runs my Nikon F75 and F65 really well. The product is even shipping from USA in some cases because its so popular that it’s been warehoused there.

AliExpress can be faster than local orders

I bought a Raspberry Pi – a super tiny computer on AliExpress that I can throw in my backpack or use for projects that need a controller. There are companies selling on AliExpress that have extremely cost effective and configurable computers that seem solid enough to be mailed to you – like this. Obviously you take a risk but then again you have a guarantee and the reputation of the seller matters. If they have many good reviews you can be quite sure its going to work or they will refund.

I find it an education in purchasing just to see what even exists on AliExpress and the fact is that mostly your products are coming from these suppliers anyway – its greener than paying for it to be sold and shipped to Amazon and then shipped to you. Amazon turns out to be the middle man – and isn’t that sad.

Its easier than walking malls looking for a rare part

I can search and find something like this cover for my Xiaomi Mi Max 3 phone. I bought the phone and had it shipped to Australia – it is a fraction of the price of an iphone and build quality is very high. Looking for a cover for the phone is very hard though in retail stores because its a very large sized phone so – unusual even when the phones themselves are quite popular.

Is G-Suite your email and video-conference solution?

  • December 7, 2019December 9, 2019
  • by Michael

There was a time when Voip was a new, exciting technology. Then Skype really pushed it forward until Microsoft mismanaged and degraded skype’s design. Google has been working at displacing Skype and Skypes security vulnerabilities have made it go from a favourite to something I tell people to stop using before they get hacked through it.

Because of that I have to recommend the best communications products at the best value rather than try to sell you something I built. Its not purely price based – as I said, security concerns can cause one product to cost you dearly. I do build and operate mail servers for special needs but this is not right for many clients – so I’m then asked to recommend which one I would use. So I’m writing this for them and I’ll update it, how to save money, get more, look professional and have the right tools to communicate swiftly with customers if need using Hangouts “Meet”.

People use Facebook business pages because … people are there in the Facebook cloud. The same goes for G-Suite – a zillion google users. People are familiar if you start inviting them with the calendar, to a hangouts meeting or a chat. Connections with new customers are more likely to go smoothly when you integrate with known solutions in today’s environment. It also helps you use all Googles tools like Google Business in such a way that everything works together – maps to website to email to video meetings.

I’ve been using and deploying Google’s email services for clients for as long as they existed and I the reason I stayed so long is security. 2 factor authentication, up-time and innovative feature that are often value adding, no extra charge. In doing so I saved my clients a lot of money and myself a lot of work.

When you need assistance I offer is to either do it for you or train people you and your staff how to use of G-Suite. I can help you back up old email and migrate to the new platform and offer hand-holding if you want to work the problem. This blog is in the “increase earnings” category because saving money and time is almost the same as increasing profit.

Google has very good security options

It is a no-brainer move if you feel worried about the security of your current email or have a website and email with a provider that you aren’t satisfied with. If you aren’t satisfied you can easily move to a new provider. With a 2 week free trial you get a lot more opportunity than you do with high pressure marketing. They don’t even ask for your credit card to start testing.

I also know how to configure a trial with an existing domain without interfering with your email server settings.

Want to empower that domain you bought?

When you buy a domain you can start putting it to good use very fast by simply connecting it to Gsuite. A single user account is only $6 per month (see discount coupons for 20% off at bottom) and services can be used simply or grown into something more professional. That is why it is worth employing a freelancer if you don’t have an IT specialist to configure your G-suite well. Email is just the tip of the communications iceberg – you build it out into collaboration as you form relationships and it is just as useful in your personal life as it is for business.

Looking for an Online Office?

Microsoft 365 is the not that much like G-Suite, but both offer online tools office suites. Google Office tools were designed for collaboration from the start. Many years ago I was a beta-user of gmail. Then these quite potent beta “apps” like Google Docs started to come out. I worked for a non-profit and I managed to get a donated 1000 pack for the organization I was in. It was a trade off – as a non-profit organisation running an IT department can be a bit of low commitment. If the money doesn’t come in then if the IT department built custom email and office servers, or relied heavily on Microsoft products the budget can be spent before you get much done.

REVIEW PRODUCT PRICING for G-Suite

Low Commitment, Low Cost

Email is crucial to your business and if things go wrong it really comes back hard. We’ll especially if you are a small business you are better off hiring a freelance IT manager such as myself. I’ll share how it went for this non-profit group – every time they wanted to do something collaborative, meetings, sharing documents, spreadsheets – there was a solution in place waiting to be discovered.

To deliver new services I simply found one user to cut learn one of the Google apps and work their way through learning process and then we introduced it to the rest of the organization. It didn’t break down (99.9% up-time) because Google was responsible. That meant less staff – that is outsourcing. It was a bit of a challenge because we didn’t have fast internet to go around but as time passed and our internet speeds increased it was a clear advantage. It was a master stroke then – and it could be the right tool.

The new Hangouts Chat app integrates phones, mail contacts, meet and is said to integrate with Google Hangouts the original product.
The Hangouts Chat has been moved to a different app but upgraded given the success of products like “slack”.

It is a very low commitment to use this – you may as well just sign up right now if you own a domain without an email. You can spend weeks trying to get set up if and run into payment obstacles or support delays if you want to use a smaller company. If you are operating a website you will certainly want to consider an email related on the same domain as the website. It helps who you are the owner and caretaker. It makes you look like you have everything in order when you start the SEO process too if your email. You can really easily get out of the deal with Google. Unlike many website providers that are selling you license agreements for Microsoft 356 which I tend to find getting hacked because the product is so complex it is often vulnerable to attacks.

You get an integrated platform

You get video conferencing with “Meet” which is like a more streamlined and refined version of the free app “Google Hangouts”. There is nothing stopping you having several video conferencing solutions but here is one thing to consider. Say you use Skype … well, I’ve had to remove it from my platform and other users because it has serious network and application vulnerabilities. People were getting hacked via Skype and I’ve read that answering the wrong call can lead some people to have their mobile phone hacked. You can further integrate these tools into your website – particularly if you are a service provider.

“Meet” is Google Hangout’s newer incarnation

Google Hangouts has been floating around for years without really making much progress. Yes, with so many projects it can become very confusing what is going on. Secure apps are one of my focus areas – some apps are vulnerable to hacking incursions. Security becomes more important every year if you and costs businesses more time. An antivirus software just doesn’t do enough, you need to plug holes that the malware or virus comes through. Hacking payloads are pre-tested with antivirus to make sure they aren’t detected before sent to you via website links, email attachments so you can get infected. One of my products is working with people to block vulnerabilities one layer at a time and choosing secure video conferencing apps is one of those layers.

It is a fair bet that the new evolution of Hangouts is the G-Sweet variation – meaning that development of the free Google Hangouts is stalled. One confirmation is that there are 2 parts that are integrated in Google Hangouts but are more elaborate as two separate apps now Hangouts Meet and Hangouts Chat. The latter “chat” is a mobile app and is working to compete with “Slack” a very popular chat and bot tool for teams to coordinate their work.

An Awesome work environment improvement – setting the lights…

  • December 5, 2019December 6, 2019
  • by Michael

Its often the simple things we don’t think about that hold us back. Creating the right work-space, an act of self care, is as important as the work itself. This is particularly important for entrepreneurs who may often work alone and have other priorities. If you are working in the digital economy, WordPress websites, making videos or written content, programming the your productivity can be many times better feel well, bright and positive. Have you noticed how great it is when you are in the zone? Extend how long you get in the zone, or even how often by setting the lights for success.

What is the aperture of the human eye? The f-number of the human eye varies from about f/8.3 in a very brightly lit place to about f/2.1 in the dark.

You may not even need your glasses!

I’m talking about a simple thing – just by buying cheap products and plugging them in you learn how to set up back lighting. Lights behind your screen that reflect off walls and other surfaces scattering a soft light This changes ‘bias lighting‘ (that link is to a They are 6500K color temperature kit for example), increasing comfort by balancing the light in your field of view.

Grey that is the same colour all the way across seems darker against a lighter overall lighting. Thus the contrast and image quality improves with good backlighting.

In fact the brain can fall into dysfunction if you work with insufficient light. Computer monitors are very bright – I’ve used them since we had to adapt TV sets to micro-computers and they can really give you headaches. Using back-lighting helps close the iris -its like helping your brains light-meter to change the aperture and that means sharper images too (f8.3 in a brightly lit place). I’ve really thought about this – I’ve known people who simply couldn’t work unless they had a certain type of screen but they couldn’t tell you why.

Back-lighting can improve the contrast of your image on screen. Not only that but it can provide very important lighting if you are video calling someone – face lighting has a lot to do with your emotional image removing dark relief that gives your face an angular more moody appearance. So, yet another reason to improve your office lighting if you attend meetings. Backlights will tend to light your face the best.

Since I moved into my new home after getting married I’ve built different work-spaces to get more out of my time. I have emergency response near where I sleep for priority customers. I’m building a business and working extra hours. Some of the areas are definitely not “office” areas – they are shared living spaces. The ceiling lights are turned off during the day but then, there is insufficient light. Become your own lighting consultant … why not?

USB lighting can be a warm positive type of light and better than some cheap home lighting. Ultra-bright LEDs have change the game. I buy different USB powered lights and position them around – facing the wall to spread light. If i have to go under the desk and look at the computer or plug something in they are handy too – better than a phone torch.

What is SAD?

Useful, cheap and cheerful and if you live in a cold part of the world with longer periods of night there is another reason you need to take lighting as serious as your need to earn a living. Winter depression (aka Season Affective Disorder(SAD)) is something to be aware of. There are warnings not to “brush off that yearly feeling as simply a case of the “winter blues”. One therapy that saves a lot of people from a dismal time of life every year is called phototherapy to be sitting with a lot of light and LEDs are one type of light that can work. The brain needs light, it changes all kinds of hormones that keep us awake, alert and other emotional symptoms.

I once learned about “winter depression” during a psychology course at University. Over the years I’ve seen people using light therapy to over-come it in various countries I visited. People who are working long shifts on their computers are becoming more aware how important lighting isto take care of your mental health. The spread of blue light filtering software is part of this, blue light is said to make sleeping more difficult if we use screens close to the time we need to sleep.

Solve problems before they arise and create more problems

Preventative solutions mean you may not have to find out for yourself by waiting until things become difficult. I know what kind of terrible work spaces people who are trying to work through hard times end up subjecting themselves to. For as little as $5 to $30 you can buy any number of TV or computer monitor back-lighting systems. Mine was a DIY job because I just happened to be at the markets and found someone selling little USB light strips. That was $5 for me. The time to act is now, and no, that old yellowish table lamp does not mean you are already set to go. You can save power and improve the situation in one upgrade. There is nothing like a cheap and excellent upgrade – this is the low hanging fruit!

Since I made my own discovery I found that I was entering a space that has existed for some time. Awareness of an easily made improvement.

Buy backlight kits from Amazon

This one was massively discounted when I wrote this: Vansky Bias Lighting

This is home theatre oriented MYPLUS LED Strip Lights USB Powered , make your office screens equally mood setting.

If you don’t want the extra distraction of colour controls and just DIY it like I did. What looks good Lemonbest 2m Resin Flexible USB LED Lights Strip or Luminoodle USB Bias Lighting and so I’m recommending equivalent OR BETTER products. I’m going to continue to upgrade and test now that I’ve realized the priority I need to put on self care.

I should note that having a little USB lamp around can also be a blessing when you need to light something you are reading or studying at your desk. This is almost identical to what I found at the night markets of Thailand and installed at home in multiple locations. TW Lighting IVY-40WT The IVY LED Desk Lamp

If you prefer Aliexpress – and I use them more because I’m often in South East Asia then … here is a search link to get you started but its hard to know quality unless you buy and test you’ll have to choose products for yourself until I can update this space with good recommendations.

Wholesale USB lighting on AliExpress

Here is a search link for USB lighting on Ali Express

In my experience if you have the budget its good to buy a couple of products because some have advantages and the delivery time can delay you getting things right. You can try different products in unexpected ways – these are generic tools that are cost effective, power saving and highly useful to reduce eye strain, improve your mood and help you work with more focus and calm.

The Blog photos are genuinely what my TV set space in the living room looked like with a USB lamp and a USB light stick. The light stick (as I call it) is plugged right into the TV’s USB socket so it turns off and on when I switch the TV on and off. One less thing to remember – low power, good light.

Armed with this information you might recover more emotional stability, improve your vision, protect your eyesight, improve income by being more productive in the long run and generally feel better. I know I do – since I had to start working with reading glasses I’ve discovered there are times I just don’t need them at all if I get this right.

Its also great to have a back light so you can keep the area useful, bright and see whats back there. It gets dusty and my little spare Raspberry Pi feels happier too being kept in the light, less forgotten.

What if I have a laptop computer?

This gooseneck USB reading light can be bent around the back of your laptop, or it could just make the workspace have a lamp where-ever you travel.
