Bitcoin’s recent 11th Birthday

  • January 10, 2020February 29, 2020
  • by Michael

First – about the featured image. Its my wife getting her ears pierced exposed over a film photo of the price of gold.

Like gold – Bitcoin seeks to be a hard asset class – and was designed to be issued with increasing scarcity over time. More about how it is issued later.

I’ve been making film photos in Thailand where I hope the government will continue to allow me to stay. I’ve used this image because I’m disappointed with images that show a coin designed to represent Bitcoin. The best thing you can do is divorce your understanding of Bitcoin from it being “a coin” because it’s main value is it has no physical form, weight and is therefore super useful. In an age where people trust paper that is counterfeited easily over databases with unheard of counterfeiting protection – Bitcoin shines. So nerdy – isn’t it.

Sometimes I end up writing to Facebook friends but realize it should be here on my Business site too! As a long term user of Bitcoin I do indeed recommend and accept Bitcoin as payment. So this article is my own writing directly from my understanding of Bitcoin.

Why accept Bitcoin as money?

Its like getting cash – its hard currency, it can’t be sucked back away by someone declaring a mistake or credit card issue. Of course the natural barriers to entry involve fear, technology, fluctuation in price. Learning to find the balance of how much Bitcoin one holds is challenging. For young people or savers who can decide not to sell but just accumulate and have patience there is no doubt that buying during depressed periods has paid off handsomely later when the price returns to or exceeds it’s average price.

Looking back the price gets going and stays going but one has to keep a very long term, slow time frame process. Traders get caught in short term moves and lose their money easily.

Its also good for keeping the Banks honest, they need competition or they just all collude to make their business model more profitable at everyone’s expense. Bitcoin causes a baseline proof of how much it can cost to transfer value over the internet outside of Banking channels – which means Banks have to compete.

Blogging on Bitcoin since 2013

People are saying today is Bitcoin’s 11th birthday
Here is a link Bitcoin annual review by a respected developer (that means computer programmer) and businessman. Or ignore that and read my review … OR if you already know plenty about Bitcoin then maybe you should visit a blog with lots of statistics such as what I’ve shared below by Jameson Lopp.

https://blog.lopp.net/bitcoin-2019-annual-review/

A brief history of time? … er, blockchain? … um not that. Oh yeah B-I-T-C-O-I-N – Bitcoin, Bitcoin, Bitcoin – 11 years on.

Bitcoin does have an economy, a circulation of buys and sells for real world purposes beyond speculation. Bitcon is money, it does have practical applications that stretch into any place people want to share money or information There was the dot.com style boom. We have been shaking out the silly start ups that come with a boom that are just pretending to have some point. Often those are referred to as the “pets.com” type of start up companies and pets.com was is a notable failure that lost investors a lot of money right near the end of the bubble. People speculate very high values on business but prices on the market eventually reverse or even collapse overnight.

Even though it failed during peak hype in today’s internet age pets.com would work because people know how to deploy a website/store efficiently. The dot.com bubble/boom was 1994 to 2000. Bitcoin appeared in 2009 but was highly obscure until 2013 around when I found it. Anyone who said they used Bitcoin before 2012 is likely pulling your leg .. there were only a tiny number of users then. I did hear about it in 2012 but didn’t get anywhere attempting to use it and it wasn’t until I heard about it again that I resumed investigating. Bitcoin is very amazing technology and people tend to go “down the rabbit hole” to learn about the whole currency industry and why Bitcoin is different.

Bitcoin remained obscure until 2015 when it “refused to die” for the umpteenth time and you will see in this review if you take time to read it that there are endless calls for Bitcoin to die and zillions of “experts” who go on TV shows with child-like comprehension of cryptocurrency, economics. The most recent, and completely unoriginal call I viewed in TV was some Indian “expert” saying if the price is going down miners will stop mining and then Bitcoin will stop and be worthless. Anyone with a modicum of time to research would know this has been said before and disproven. Bitcoin adjusts – as people do stop mining, bigger groups continue to mine anyway and the reduced competition increases their profitability – or “yield”.

Another halving … halvening, halfo?

Bitcoin issues rewards at a slowing pace – every 4 years the issuance rate is halved. That event has various names as per this title. Bitcoin’s issuance rate has an economic policy which is staunchly defended by many parts of its user base. There is a whole history of groups basically making attacks on Bitcoin’s project goals. They make arguments as to why Bitcoin is failing (when it isn’t) to tempt community to change the design breaking promises that are seen as “core values”.

You can Fork Off

By “branching” the Bitcoin code to a new project there comes a point where there is a fork and one set of data goes one way and other continues as it was working already. The traction of this new database (blockchain) which strays too far the original policy it only takes a limited group who can be convinced away. People who owned Bitcoin now own some of this fakecoin project that is also referred to as a “fork” and there were many such attempts. So the way you know the “real” Bitcoin is that exchanges call it Bitcoin (well 99%) Sometimes sometimes a proponent of the new fakecoin has enough money to operate their own exchange and misname their fake Bitcoin such that people might be fraudulently sold this fakecoin as Bitcoin – but the data won’t be on the real Bitcoin network.

Illusions and Gold

Many religions and cults are built around disagreements in what is real and what is an illusion. Some illusions are functional to the point of being “real enough”. If you invest in gold you may just be investing in “trust” that the company holds the gold for real. You leave gold in their vault and transfer some kind of ownership certificate or balance in an exchange system. Such companies have been known to sell the same gold (which they supposedly hold in their vault) 30 times over as ‘paper gold’ – certificates. They sometimes lend the gold they sell “on paper” so they never had gold really. The process of conversion to actual gold tends to have delays and obstacals so you can’t do a run on their “vault” and find out its almost empty. That is sometimes explained as why Gold has been depressed – the market is flooded with oversupply of paper. Why markets buy gold … that’s a whole economics study in itself. Sometimes even paper gold is better than other assets. There is some legal system where eventually you should be able to claim something back.

What makes Bitcoin more “Real” than Gold?

I’m glad you didn’t ask … wait, i asked on your behalf because its such an important question. Bitcoin can’t be counterfeited like that – it is in and of itself an accounting system where all nodes (computers) running the software confirm via intensely secure cryptography that the ownership is not “duplicated”. Sure if you give someone else your keys to the bitcoin they can spend it too – but if they spend it first, you can’t and then it moves to a different key where a new owner has the right to spend it. This is sometimes called a “triple book” accounting.

Not just double book with matching or reconcilable debits (you spent) and credits (they received) but also consensus. Consensus is a real time “protocol” (computers aka “nodes” agree its your transaction as valid) that takes time to check against a whole network of nodes. The more blocks of agreement of different spending that pass since your spend was accepted by the network the more impossible it becomes to “roll back”. The truth is that in all the years very few roll backs have occurred and they only happen when one part of the network is slightly off from another. Then the network decides which branch is real – reverting any spends on the wrong fork. So fork has another meaning – the longest chain of transaction records that is validated by consensus.

The monetary policy of Bitcoin

The way gold finds its way into the economy is by people digging it out of the ground. Gold miners can only do this if the price of mining is cheaper than the price of gold when they sell it to cover their costs. Like gold Bitcoin is designed to distribute rewards to those who operate the network – they uncover new Bitcoin when they solve lottery like searches for mathematically acceptable proofs used in cryptography.

This requires electricity to run very fast computers if they expect to find these “solutions” and include them in a new block of transactions to get a reward. They are called miners – and they compete in a lottery like system for who can solve the next block – by luckily finding a very difficult number via “hashing” functions that is valid to use to submit a new block of transactions. This was a solution to the double spending “problem”. Banks don’t have this technology – they merely use authority (which can easily be subverted) to decide that their databases are valid. That is why Banks constantly endure fraud, theft, hacks and other disasters. Bitcoin – has one issue, its only an issue if the users can’t manage the security and possession of keys. When and if you lose the keys to your bitcoin then … good bye bitcoin. Don’t fret though there are programs, devices designed to store, backup – but you have to keep secrets and not lose them. If you can’t then you have to trust someone to help store them for you, or even take possession – but to do so would be not “bitcoiner” style because its not necessary to entrust your money to a bank with Bitcoin. You can and should become your own bank.

Share Great Ideas – with a website

  • December 11, 2019June 7, 2020
  • by Michael

Living in a new part of the world – its really common to want to build a website to document your experiences and life. I’m an experienced expat and it can be far easier to work through me than try to deal with online companies with terrible customer service. While initial costs are higher because of my expertise, longer term expect a trouble free service with very fast turnaround on support requests.

Great Ideas can be wasted on Social media

Making connections with people is what blogging can be about, reaching out with your ideas and experiences. Where-ever you go – social media, forums, chats – meeting people in actual real life and giving them your details. Easy – yeah, sure? A website can be far safer to share than a Facebook friendship of someone you don’t really know. Blogs on Facebook are often not very persistent, they fade away and don’t get categorized. If you are willing to learn something like WordPress blogging can become as easy for you as it is for millions of users. I’d like to support you through that learning curve – it can be steep climb until the logic of the site is explained.

Then there is that section that is always nagging when you sign up – “your website?” – yeah – i have to get one of those one day. You don’t have one? Maybe you can get one for free, almost instantly. There are many ways to do this but in the end people end up re-doing it later to get more flexibility.

Contact me and I’ll help you get great ideas to where-ever you want them to reach. That doesn’t mean I’ll pitch you the same old product ideas – I’ll listen and then if I don’t have the advice ready I’ll research and come back to you. On the other hand there are tried and tested things you can do and I’m more interested in making new friends with similar ideas than just finding paying customers. I have a long history of getting people started just to see where it takes them.

For example … here are some ideas for shopping because, well I’m often shopping to find things I need to do my work. So its just another thing to share, customers and clients ask for recommends constantly.

Here’s a great idea for expats: An Amazon alternative. AliExpress

Amazon doesn’t deliver cheaply to some parts of the world – particularly South East Asia where a lot of people travel for extended trips working. Then they need a few little things – well you may have heard of Alibaba – but for small consumer orders I recommend AliExpress – they really guarantee their deliveries and I’ve been refunded when there was any issue. Much better than Ebay too.

AliExpress have NEW USER SPECIALS too where you get big discounts just for trying first time. So honestly, if you are banging your head trying to find or order something from this is your alternative. I’ve ordered tons of parts and built things from Ebay, Amazon and I would say AliExpress is the best experience so far. The site works well in English too. When in Thailand most of the websites were too hard for me to navigate to order things but many orders from AliExpress arrived quite fast and carved through customs. The prices are amazing much of the time. With Aliexpress for example I was able to get something I couldn’t find elsewhere. CR2 batteries are hard enough to find – for old cameras – like film cameras. I bought CR2 batteries and a charger and it actually runs my Nikon F75 and F65 really well. The product is even shipping from USA in some cases because its so popular that it’s been warehoused there.

AliExpress can be faster than local orders

I bought a Raspberry Pi – a super tiny computer on AliExpress that I can throw in my backpack or use for projects that need a controller. There are companies selling on AliExpress that have extremely cost effective and configurable computers that seem solid enough to be mailed to you – like this. Obviously you take a risk but then again you have a guarantee and the reputation of the seller matters. If they have many good reviews you can be quite sure its going to work or they will refund.

I find it an education in purchasing just to see what even exists on AliExpress and the fact is that mostly your products are coming from these suppliers anyway – its greener than paying for it to be sold and shipped to Amazon and then shipped to you. Amazon turns out to be the middle man – and isn’t that sad.

Its easier than walking malls looking for a rare part

I can search and find something like this cover for my Xiaomi Mi Max 3 phone. I bought the phone and had it shipped to Australia – it is a fraction of the price of an iphone and build quality is very high. Looking for a cover for the phone is very hard though in retail stores because its a very large sized phone so – unusual even when the phones themselves are quite popular.

Is G-Suite your email and video-conference solution?

  • December 7, 2019December 9, 2019
  • by Michael

There was a time when Voip was a new, exciting technology. Then Skype really pushed it forward until Microsoft mismanaged and degraded skype’s design. Google has been working at displacing Skype and Skypes security vulnerabilities have made it go from a favourite to something I tell people to stop using before they get hacked through it.

Because of that I have to recommend the best communications products at the best value rather than try to sell you something I built. Its not purely price based – as I said, security concerns can cause one product to cost you dearly. I do build and operate mail servers for special needs but this is not right for many clients – so I’m then asked to recommend which one I would use. So I’m writing this for them and I’ll update it, how to save money, get more, look professional and have the right tools to communicate swiftly with customers if need using Hangouts “Meet”.

People use Facebook business pages because … people are there in the Facebook cloud. The same goes for G-Suite – a zillion google users. People are familiar if you start inviting them with the calendar, to a hangouts meeting or a chat. Connections with new customers are more likely to go smoothly when you integrate with known solutions in today’s environment. It also helps you use all Googles tools like Google Business in such a way that everything works together – maps to website to email to video meetings.

I’ve been using and deploying Google’s email services for clients for as long as they existed and I the reason I stayed so long is security. 2 factor authentication, up-time and innovative feature that are often value adding, no extra charge. In doing so I saved my clients a lot of money and myself a lot of work.

When you need assistance I offer is to either do it for you or train people you and your staff how to use of G-Suite. I can help you back up old email and migrate to the new platform and offer hand-holding if you want to work the problem. This blog is in the “increase earnings” category because saving money and time is almost the same as increasing profit.

Google has very good security options

It is a no-brainer move if you feel worried about the security of your current email or have a website and email with a provider that you aren’t satisfied with. If you aren’t satisfied you can easily move to a new provider. With a 2 week free trial you get a lot more opportunity than you do with high pressure marketing. They don’t even ask for your credit card to start testing.

I also know how to configure a trial with an existing domain without interfering with your email server settings.

Want to empower that domain you bought?

When you buy a domain you can start putting it to good use very fast by simply connecting it to Gsuite. A single user account is only $6 per month (see discount coupons for 20% off at bottom) and services can be used simply or grown into something more professional. That is why it is worth employing a freelancer if you don’t have an IT specialist to configure your G-suite well. Email is just the tip of the communications iceberg – you build it out into collaboration as you form relationships and it is just as useful in your personal life as it is for business.

Looking for an Online Office?

Microsoft 365 is the not that much like G-Suite, but both offer online tools office suites. Google Office tools were designed for collaboration from the start. Many years ago I was a beta-user of gmail. Then these quite potent beta “apps” like Google Docs started to come out. I worked for a non-profit and I managed to get a donated 1000 pack for the organization I was in. It was a trade off – as a non-profit organisation running an IT department can be a bit of low commitment. If the money doesn’t come in then if the IT department built custom email and office servers, or relied heavily on Microsoft products the budget can be spent before you get much done.

REVIEW PRODUCT PRICING for G-Suite

Low Commitment, Low Cost

Email is crucial to your business and if things go wrong it really comes back hard. We’ll especially if you are a small business you are better off hiring a freelance IT manager such as myself. I’ll share how it went for this non-profit group – every time they wanted to do something collaborative, meetings, sharing documents, spreadsheets – there was a solution in place waiting to be discovered.

To deliver new services I simply found one user to cut learn one of the Google apps and work their way through learning process and then we introduced it to the rest of the organization. It didn’t break down (99.9% up-time) because Google was responsible. That meant less staff – that is outsourcing. It was a bit of a challenge because we didn’t have fast internet to go around but as time passed and our internet speeds increased it was a clear advantage. It was a master stroke then – and it could be the right tool.

The new Hangouts Chat app integrates phones, mail contacts, meet and is said to integrate with Google Hangouts the original product.
The Hangouts Chat has been moved to a different app but upgraded given the success of products like “slack”.

It is a very low commitment to use this – you may as well just sign up right now if you own a domain without an email. You can spend weeks trying to get set up if and run into payment obstacles or support delays if you want to use a smaller company. If you are operating a website you will certainly want to consider an email related on the same domain as the website. It helps who you are the owner and caretaker. It makes you look like you have everything in order when you start the SEO process too if your email. You can really easily get out of the deal with Google. Unlike many website providers that are selling you license agreements for Microsoft 356 which I tend to find getting hacked because the product is so complex it is often vulnerable to attacks.

You get an integrated platform

You get video conferencing with “Meet” which is like a more streamlined and refined version of the free app “Google Hangouts”. There is nothing stopping you having several video conferencing solutions but here is one thing to consider. Say you use Skype … well, I’ve had to remove it from my platform and other users because it has serious network and application vulnerabilities. People were getting hacked via Skype and I’ve read that answering the wrong call can lead some people to have their mobile phone hacked. You can further integrate these tools into your website – particularly if you are a service provider.

“Meet” is Google Hangout’s newer incarnation

Google Hangouts has been floating around for years without really making much progress. Yes, with so many projects it can become very confusing what is going on. Secure apps are one of my focus areas – some apps are vulnerable to hacking incursions. Security becomes more important every year if you and costs businesses more time. An antivirus software just doesn’t do enough, you need to plug holes that the malware or virus comes through. Hacking payloads are pre-tested with antivirus to make sure they aren’t detected before sent to you via website links, email attachments so you can get infected. One of my products is working with people to block vulnerabilities one layer at a time and choosing secure video conferencing apps is one of those layers.

It is a fair bet that the new evolution of Hangouts is the G-Sweet variation – meaning that development of the free Google Hangouts is stalled. One confirmation is that there are 2 parts that are integrated in Google Hangouts but are more elaborate as two separate apps now Hangouts Meet and Hangouts Chat. The latter “chat” is a mobile app and is working to compete with “Slack” a very popular chat and bot tool for teams to coordinate their work.

An Awesome work environment improvement – setting the lights…

  • December 5, 2019December 6, 2019
  • by Michael

Its often the simple things we don’t think about that hold us back. Creating the right work-space, an act of self care, is as important as the work itself. This is particularly important for entrepreneurs who may often work alone and have other priorities. If you are working in the digital economy, WordPress websites, making videos or written content, programming the your productivity can be many times better feel well, bright and positive. Have you noticed how great it is when you are in the zone? Extend how long you get in the zone, or even how often by setting the lights for success.

What is the aperture of the human eye? The f-number of the human eye varies from about f/8.3 in a very brightly lit place to about f/2.1 in the dark.

You may not even need your glasses!

I’m talking about a simple thing – just by buying cheap products and plugging them in you learn how to set up back lighting. Lights behind your screen that reflect off walls and other surfaces scattering a soft light This changes ‘bias lighting‘ (that link is to a They are 6500K color temperature kit for example), increasing comfort by balancing the light in your field of view.

Grey that is the same colour all the way across seems darker against a lighter overall lighting. Thus the contrast and image quality improves with good backlighting.

In fact the brain can fall into dysfunction if you work with insufficient light. Computer monitors are very bright – I’ve used them since we had to adapt TV sets to micro-computers and they can really give you headaches. Using back-lighting helps close the iris -its like helping your brains light-meter to change the aperture and that means sharper images too (f8.3 in a brightly lit place). I’ve really thought about this – I’ve known people who simply couldn’t work unless they had a certain type of screen but they couldn’t tell you why.

Back-lighting can improve the contrast of your image on screen. Not only that but it can provide very important lighting if you are video calling someone – face lighting has a lot to do with your emotional image removing dark relief that gives your face an angular more moody appearance. So, yet another reason to improve your office lighting if you attend meetings. Backlights will tend to light your face the best.

Since I moved into my new home after getting married I’ve built different work-spaces to get more out of my time. I have emergency response near where I sleep for priority customers. I’m building a business and working extra hours. Some of the areas are definitely not “office” areas – they are shared living spaces. The ceiling lights are turned off during the day but then, there is insufficient light. Become your own lighting consultant … why not?

USB lighting can be a warm positive type of light and better than some cheap home lighting. Ultra-bright LEDs have change the game. I buy different USB powered lights and position them around – facing the wall to spread light. If i have to go under the desk and look at the computer or plug something in they are handy too – better than a phone torch.

What is SAD?

Useful, cheap and cheerful and if you live in a cold part of the world with longer periods of night there is another reason you need to take lighting as serious as your need to earn a living. Winter depression (aka Season Affective Disorder(SAD)) is something to be aware of. There are warnings not to “brush off that yearly feeling as simply a case of the “winter blues”. One therapy that saves a lot of people from a dismal time of life every year is called phototherapy to be sitting with a lot of light and LEDs are one type of light that can work. The brain needs light, it changes all kinds of hormones that keep us awake, alert and other emotional symptoms.

I once learned about “winter depression” during a psychology course at University. Over the years I’ve seen people using light therapy to over-come it in various countries I visited. People who are working long shifts on their computers are becoming more aware how important lighting isto take care of your mental health. The spread of blue light filtering software is part of this, blue light is said to make sleeping more difficult if we use screens close to the time we need to sleep.

Solve problems before they arise and create more problems

Preventative solutions mean you may not have to find out for yourself by waiting until things become difficult. I know what kind of terrible work spaces people who are trying to work through hard times end up subjecting themselves to. For as little as $5 to $30 you can buy any number of TV or computer monitor back-lighting systems. Mine was a DIY job because I just happened to be at the markets and found someone selling little USB light strips. That was $5 for me. The time to act is now, and no, that old yellowish table lamp does not mean you are already set to go. You can save power and improve the situation in one upgrade. There is nothing like a cheap and excellent upgrade – this is the low hanging fruit!

Since I made my own discovery I found that I was entering a space that has existed for some time. Awareness of an easily made improvement.

Buy backlight kits from Amazon

This one was massively discounted when I wrote this: Vansky Bias Lighting

This is home theatre oriented MYPLUS LED Strip Lights USB Powered , make your office screens equally mood setting.

If you don’t want the extra distraction of colour controls and just DIY it like I did. What looks good Lemonbest 2m Resin Flexible USB LED Lights Strip or Luminoodle USB Bias Lighting and so I’m recommending equivalent OR BETTER products. I’m going to continue to upgrade and test now that I’ve realized the priority I need to put on self care.

I should note that having a little USB lamp around can also be a blessing when you need to light something you are reading or studying at your desk. This is almost identical to what I found at the night markets of Thailand and installed at home in multiple locations. TW Lighting IVY-40WT The IVY LED Desk Lamp

If you prefer Aliexpress – and I use them more because I’m often in South East Asia then … here is a search link to get you started but its hard to know quality unless you buy and test you’ll have to choose products for yourself until I can update this space with good recommendations.

Wholesale USB lighting on AliExpress

Here is a search link for USB lighting on Ali Express

In my experience if you have the budget its good to buy a couple of products because some have advantages and the delivery time can delay you getting things right. You can try different products in unexpected ways – these are generic tools that are cost effective, power saving and highly useful to reduce eye strain, improve your mood and help you work with more focus and calm.

The Blog photos are genuinely what my TV set space in the living room looked like with a USB lamp and a USB light stick. The light stick (as I call it) is plugged right into the TV’s USB socket so it turns off and on when I switch the TV on and off. One less thing to remember – low power, good light.

Armed with this information you might recover more emotional stability, improve your vision, protect your eyesight, improve income by being more productive in the long run and generally feel better. I know I do – since I had to start working with reading glasses I’ve discovered there are times I just don’t need them at all if I get this right.

Its also great to have a back light so you can keep the area useful, bright and see whats back there. It gets dusty and my little spare Raspberry Pi feels happier too being kept in the light, less forgotten.

What if I have a laptop computer?

This gooseneck USB reading light can be bent around the back of your laptop, or it could just make the workspace have a lamp where-ever you travel.

Straight Talk on WordPress

  • October 27, 2019December 4, 2019
  • by Michael

Almost nothing anyone says can be trusted on monetized websites. This website will be using monetized links so I guess you will have to apply that here too. Yet I’m an older guy, who started before there were even web pages and so I can tell you dinosaur stories of FTP to Helsinki (Finland) university via the education research network that extended out of ARPAnet. You can’t even find Wikipedia or google much about those days. I just remember saying, i’m downloading a file from Helsinki – nice. However, i’d been downloading files with modems and BBS systems for a while already. Being older doesn’t make you the best though … that takes day to day work staying on top of things. Mostly you learn because you have customers and you learn by resolving their problems for them.

So anyway – then came the days of ugly websites with the occasional beauty but generally … not so nice. However, it was the information and pictures that people were really looking for. Video was mostly out of the question then. Years passed, I worked for companies, I worked for Buddhists, and I used the various CMS as they showed up … Joomla, Drupal were some nicer ones. Had arguments about PHPnuke which was the first PHP cms – or so they claim. One guy I worked with wanted to use it and I said, “but nobody cares anymore” he was years behind trying to use “the best product”. Before long friends were saying “WordPress” and they loved that. Then they got hacked … there were no security solutions back then. Today that WordPress draw-cards is ubiquitous and people tend to go looking for a specialized provider. So I’m working to support it and secure it for clients. My mother used WordPress, my dad uses it today. I’m using it right now – this is WordPress. I have clients who use it – but mostly I become their IT provider so I can remove the malware that has slipped in.

So to help my clients I’ve created my own hardened servers … to reduce the chance of attacks being successful. However, if you run WordPress you are really mostly in the hands of the developers to find exploits, issue updates and you have to apply the updates before its too late and some automated bot finds your website and applies the exploit to sneak in malware or make other “hacks”. Companies will always tell you they will handle that but they tend to leave people on outdated servers where the updates can’t even be applied because some component needed by WordPress is too old (PHP for example). What you can do is use “security plugins” … because that is one of the main draw-cards for WordPress, the features you add with plugins.

Of course the plugins could make your WordPress vulnerable – so you need to have your website checked the same way an attacker would detect if you were vulnerable. You are unlikely to find a provider who will give you a free offensive security check … but some of the security plugins are almost at that level … almost. The fact is that WordPress security is getting to be somewhat expensive and it makes you wonder if the security providers are attacking everyone so they come to them and pay for assistance. They have all kinds of “help me” and “clean my site”. That is what you might wonder when you see the scale of operations and complexity – one provider I’m looking at doesn’t even have a single plugin they talk about 4 categories of security plugins – prevention, detection, auditing and utility. If the solution is that time consuming the user isn’t better off, you make security beyond a tickbox.

That would be why you might want to use a smaller company who just takes responsibility to offer you a secure website and audit it, check in and update, correct issues. I always try to offer the best of free or “part of the deal” access so there isn’t an endless up-sell. Real security is about trying to rid the web of threats by making the solutions free – that is what open source is about. If there is money left to invest – best to spend that on your IT staff or consulting, the provider.
